This is a question we get asked all the time here at Mad Hatters Fancy Dress. To be honest it varies hugely year on year and season on season. For instance all the panto’s we do at the beginning of the year require dame costumes, then we are in high demand for Book Week costumes in March, followed by Rabbit costumes and Chicken outfits for Easter and so it goes on. But perhaps one of the most popular themes over the past few years is 80’s parties. This is always a hard theme in that people don’t want to look like they are wearing something from their own cupboard, but it is also an era, close enough in time, that many of us may well still have a denim jacket or rock band t-shirt stuffed into a back draw. For this era, I would say our most popular costume would be Adam Ant fancy dress, with its flamboyant New Romantic ruffles, tight trousers, and wig with plaits and ribbons in. Everyone knows you have made an effort with this one!
Another popular outfit which we now have several of, are the 2 person costumes. We have 2 Cow costumes, 2 Donkey outfits, 2 horse fancy dress, 3 camel costumes, 1 unicorn outfit and 3 Reindeer dress-ups all in the 2 person version. These are very popular for plays, parties, promotions and TV commercials so we try to keep a good range available at all times.
So in conclusion, we can’t really say there is a specific “most popular” costume, it comes down to the fads and fashions of the time and what you, our loyal customers, want to see on our rails.
